How To Check Your Furnace Filter Without Breaking A Sweat

Not sure when you last checked your furnace filter? You’re not alone. It’s one of those simple home maintenance tasks that’s easy to forget but makes a big difference in how well your system works.

The good news? Checking your furnace filter is quick, easy, and doesn’t require any tools or fancy know-how. Let’s walk through how you can do it yourself without breaking a sweat.

Where Do You Even Find The Filter?

That’s the first question most people ask. Your furnace filter is usually located either inside the furnace cabinet or in the return air vent. It’s typically tucked into a slot on the side, bottom, or back of the unit. If you’re not sure where to look, just follow the large duct that brings air into the furnace.

Safety First -So Turn Off Your Furnace

Before you do anything else, make sure your furnace is off. Either switch it off at the thermostat or flip the power switch nearby. This step is all about safety and preventing dust from flying everywhere while you check or replace the filter.

Slide It Out Gently

Once you’ve located the filter, carefully slide it out of its compartment. Take a quick peek, what does it look like? If it’s covered in dust, dirt, or pet hair, that’s a sign it’s past its prime.

Use The Light Test

Here’s a simple trick: hold the filter up to a light. If you can’t see light coming through it, it’s time for a new one. Even if it doesn’t look “that bad,” reduced airflow from a clogged filter can make your furnace work harder, and that means higher energy bills and more wear and tear.

Ready To Replace?

Find the size on the edge of your old filter (it’ll be printed right there) and grab a matching replacement. When installing the new one, make sure the arrow on the side points in the direction of the airflow, usually toward the furnace.

Don’t Forget To Turn The Furnace Back On

Once the new filter is in place, turn your furnace back on, and you’re all set. You just improved your air quality and helped your furnace run more efficiently. High five!
