HOW TO REPAIR DRYWALL BEFORE PAINTING

You’ve decided to update the look of your home with a new color. Although painting is the easiest and most cost-effective method to instantly transform your home, it’s not easy. Preparation is key to getting a high-quality paint job that lasts. You must make sure your walls are well-repaired before you start painting.

How To Fix Drywall Before You Paint

You should inspect the walls carefully after you have removed any art or other decorative items. You’ll usually find some small flaws due to everyday wear and tear. These include small dents, bubbles and scrapes, nail pops and small holes from hanging photos, as well as small holes. You might also be dealing with more severe damage like larger holes, caulking cracks or dents from door knobs.

These imperfections can be difficult to see at first but will become obvious if you paint them over without first fixing them. You can use a utility lamp to highlight difficult-to-see areas. Circle the spot with a pencil, not a marker or pen. You will know if it needs to be repaired.

Filling all holes, dents and gouges is the first step in repairing drywall to paint. It’s easy and quick for small holes. Fill the required areas with a premixed drywall compound or mix it yourself. Smoothen the compound. To ensure that the compound is evenly covered, it’s best to apply two coats. Allow the compound to dry, then smoothen the surface with sandpaper.

The process for larger holes is more complicated. You can apply an adhesive drywall patch to cover a hole less than 6 inches in diameter. Then, add a layer of drywall compound. Let the compound dry before applying a second coat. You can smoothen the compound once it’s dried.

After you are done sanding the walls, vacuum up all the dust and wipe them down with a damp cloth. Let the walls dry completely before applying your primer coat.

How To Prepare Drywall Before Painting

To ensure that your paint finish is perfect, it’s a good idea for you to wipe down the walls once more with a microfiber cloth. This step should be completed before you apply the primer coat. Apply the primer coat. You can apply it like regular paint. You should apply a thin coat of primer and let it dry completely.

After the primer has dried, you can rub your hands on the walls to find any areas that need more sanding. After you are satisfied that the walls have been smoothed, you can start painting!
